My desire to paint began when I noticed that I reacted emotionally to various works of art, especially "living oil" painting. As time passed and I spent time at galleries and museums, I just had to begin painting myself. I felt compelled to work and have become increasingly passionate about it.
The most important thing an artist ever said to me was "Get something on canvas and keep doing it. Painters paint." Since then, I have enthusiastically endeavored to harness and express the onrush of ideas and need to paint that I have experienced. My sensibility is to use primary colors, often from the tube. And basic, strong shapes. I like to introduce a jazz-like visual riff, using distortion, and juxtaposition to reorder a range of symbols and references. I enjoy filling my work with comments and stories that will draw the viewer in to the experience. A kind of figurative expressionism, you might say. And I owe a great deal to the legacy of many artists, past and contemporary. The whole experience has been amazing and I am anxious to keep learning, discovering and creating.
